HOW TO TURN STUDY GAP TO ADVANTAGE WHEN APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS ABROAD

So, you’ve graduated for like three or four years ago, and wants to apply for scholarship or admissions to further your studies abroad. You’re scared. Can this be a problem? Will they reject me? Will I be denied VISA?

The answer is NO!

Undoubtedly, you can turn these study-gap years to your advantage during application.

Most times, those four, five, six years’ study gap, you did not spend them doing nothing. Did you? You were probably working, volunteering, assisting, whatever it is. Whether it was paid or unpaid, you were doing something. And that is the advantage I’m talking about!

Now, how can you explore these accumulated experiences in your application? Remember, you’ve gotten a real work experience. You’re not just a fresh graduate with a generic résumé. Have that in mind.

If these work experiences are related to your undergraduate studies, it is even much better. Because you have an accumulated industry work experience. This is golden!

However, if your work experience is not related to your previous field of study, do not panic. In your application, highlight the skills you have accumulated in your many years of work experience and relate it to the desired skills required in your application.

Take for instance, you graduated as a Microbiologist, then got married, worked as a teacher during your youth service, volunteered in some health awareness programs, etc. What skills could you pick out from these experiences; teamwork, negotiation, problem solving, result oriented, budgeting, managerial abilities, executive assistance, supply chain management….name it. These are valuable skills. Document them.

How do you do this? It’s by incorporating these skills into your CV and making it palatable and outstanding!
