THREE SECRETS TO A SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION

Applying for Postgraduate scholarships can be such a daunting task, more so, with many study options and strict deadlines screaming for your time, you will need more than just luck to make a successful application. 

Looking to make your application, here are three success tips that can boost your chances of getting selected.  

SECRET ONE: YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF

It is worrisome that every year, quite a number of international students fall victims to fraudulent agents who promise them mouth-watering benefits in form of scholarship admissions or job opportunities in various countries. Too often, many students have had to forfeit their academic plans because of the exorbitant charges made by these agents or they experience unnecessary delays in processing their applications due to errors or omissions caused by the agents. But this doesn’t have to the case for you, as you can process your application all by yourself. You are by far, the most eligible and legitimate person who has your best interest at heart, so you can sit down to give life to your dreams.

Do not give in to the notion that it is very difficult and so you cannot attempt it. In fact, YOU CAN AND YOU SHOULD.

Even if you fail at your first attempt, try again, even more intelligently.

SECRET TWO: YOU NEED TO PRODUCE AN EXCEPTIONAL APPLICATION PACKAGE. 

It was the late Steve Jobs that said, "Packaging can be theater, it can create a story." If this is true, then imagine submitting an application that is both powerful and irresistible; such that all the schools you applied to offer you a slot, with a banquet of benefits attached to them.  You would be excited, wouldn’t you? A lot of graduates worry about their CPGA scores as if it is the determinant factor for an excellent application. NO!!!  Every graduate scholarship applicant (for instance, a Nigerian graduate with a CPGA of 3.5 or a Second Class Upper Division) is eligible to apply for a scholarship in any country of their choice.  It is nearly irrelevant whether you have a first-class (unless the offer is strictly for First class graduates). Now, an exceptional application package must consist of the following;

           ·           1. Academic result,

              2. Transcript,

              3. Curriculum Vitae,

              4.  A strong statement of purpose,

              5.  A track record of leadership roles you may have played prior to applying;

All of these materials put together,  make a formidable package that cannot go unnoticed.

You must therefore ensure that you put in a strong and compelling application.

Do not be apathetic.

Do you know that your official interaction with your assigned supervisor during the application process is being evaluated? If you didn’t, now you do. Therefore, you cannot afford to be clumsy, lacking initiative, or an ineffective communicator. Lacking these soft skills is two times more likely to limit your application than having a dent in your academic credentials.

SECRET THREE: DO NOT SECOND-GUESS YOURSELF 

Thanks to the Internet, the world has become a global village where you can access vital information with just a click. Now, this means, you are exposed to an array of news of scholarships opportunities from all over the world.

Scholarship opportunities like Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, MasterCard Foundation, International Monetary Fund’s Programs, DAAD, Exeter International Full-free Scholarship, and so many other opportunities are released to the public domain on a daily basis. Due to its highly competitive nature, you (as an international student) is also competing with many outstanding students from all over the world. At this stage ─ your race, color, ethnicity, religion, economic status, or family background does not matter. All that matters to the school’s board are your academic prowess, leadership qualities, and resiliency in surmounting challenges that you may be faced with. 

So do not limit yourself by thinking you are not good or fit enough to compete for these opportunities. You must believe in your capacity to make a powerful impression.

Having a victim-mindset will only be a clog in the wheel of your advancement.
