MAPPING OUT YOUR SUCCESS STRATEGY

In one of our previous editions, What is your strategy?, we discussed the common obstacles that students people face while applying for international studies. Now we will discuss the strategies that you can deploy to make a successful application.

1.  Fear/self-limiting thoughts: At one time, a student said he did not apply for one of the best universities in the UK, "because he thought it was too competitive and he didn’t think he had what it took to compete to win”.

That is fear in action ─ a lack of belief in oneself.

If you are one of those who thinks that international studies applications are too competitive and that you would never stand a chance, all you need to do is to CHANGE YOUR MINDSET.

You must reject the notion that "applying for a scholarship is too complicated and competitive" or "I am not worth it.  Instead, speak positive, find out what it takes to achieve success, get a tutor (Of course, Vantage Migration is just a call away) and GO FOR GOLD.

"Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy."--Dale Carnegie

2. Lack of funds: Financial incapability is by far, one of the most common obstacles young students are faced with. While your decision to study abroad maybe quite a laudable one, as it offers many potential advantages, lack of funds and resources may present enormous challenges for any individual interested in enrolling in international studies.

If you think you are smart enough but lack the financial resources to pursue international education, you can consider some of the most common financial aid instruments available to international students.

They are:

  • Loans
  • Grants
  • University scholarships
  • Government scholarships
  • Scholarships granted by charitable institutions
  • Fellowships

You can read about it extensively in It must not be scholarship!

"We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."Albert Einstein

3. Procrastination: This simply means “putting off for tomorrow what you can do today”. Too often, we are caught in the web of putting off important tasks and taking on less important ones. And with the influx of various forms of excitement on social media, it is becoming extremely difficult to focus. Well, know this, school applications have timelines and deadlines and there is nothing you can do about it.

Are you serious about making that application in good time? Here are a few things you can do:

  • Make a to-do list
  • Get rid of distractions
  • Start with the most difficult tasks first
  • Don’t blow the assignment out of proportion
  • Tell someone about your goal (It is always good to have someone who can hold you accountable)
If you put off everything till you're sure of it, you'll never get anything done."--Vincent Norman Peale

4. Improper documentation: Schools and institutions all over the world have a list of criteria that is acceptable within their spheres. Too often, many students complain about their inability to advance to the next stage of their application, but rarely do they know they may be limiting themselves by their inconsistencies and carelessness. Not paying close attention to a school’s standard process will have your application thrown in the trash. Also, inaccurate and incomplete documentation can lead to the termination of your application.

Going forward, before you start applying, you must read through the eligibility and required documentation page, and then get on to get your documents ready to avoid such occurrences.

To submit an application, you will need to ensure all of your documents are readily available. These may include:

  • Certified copies of your academic transcripts and other supporting documentation
  • Evidence of your English language proficiency (if available)

"Obviously, you can't increase the price until you do the due diligence. That was putting the cart before the horse."--Robert  Johnston

5. Applying to the wrong schools/wrong application: Like the point raised in the previous heading, you must apply due diligence while applying for international studies. It is possible that you have your documentation intact, but you are applying to different schools. For this reason, you will need to check EVERYTHING. Imagine applying to a Master’s with the wrong Bachelor’s degree.

Oops!

I am sure you do not want to imagine that.

“If you want to achieve something stupendous, then you have to be Fastidious and Meticulous”--Musical Panchal

6. Grammatical errors/incomplete essays: An essay with numerous grammatical errors/ mistakes will leave a permanent bad impression on your supervisor about your application. Too often, 3 out of every 10 applications lack clarity and precision. Choosing to correct your grammar mistakes is only the first step in making sure that you write great essays. However, do not go about writing and submitting your application without having a second and third eye to help point out grammatical and structural errors in your application.

Error is not a fault of our knowledge, but a mistake of our judgment giving assent to that which is not true.” John Locke
