Mistakes to avoid if you're planning on studying abroad
If you do land abroad as an international student, you can do better by avoiding some mistakes. And considering the high cost of overseas education, these are costly mistakes.
1.
Don't choose any country.
Most
students, unfortunately, decide to study abroad to get a work permit and, in
due course, a PR visa. In their desperation to do so, they select any
destination and institution that can give them an admission letter.
They
aim to get a student visa, reach abroad and not earn good quality international
qualifications to help them make a career. This is a very bad way to start.
Truth is, you might go abroad but might not make good use of the opportunities
of being abroad.
2.
Make your education a priority
Of
course, you traveled because you want to study abroad. As much as there are
other purposes to studying abroad, you should not override the importance of
completing your education. As an international student, your priority should be
to study first.
Doing
part-time jobs (usually 20 hours a week) is fine, but the purpose should be to
get exposure to the international work environment. Doing well in studies can
get you excellent scholarships for future studies and, most notably, good
references from your Lecturers and Professors that will land you high-paying jobs after graduation. So do not mess up the process.
Also,
good grades during studies will ensure that your starting packages will be
excellent and in occupations open under PR visa categories.
3.
Once Abroad, Choose your social circle carefully.
Increasing
your social circle beyond your community is critically important. If you stay
with the same community members, it defeats one of the main reasons you go
overseas for studies.
If
possible, stay with local families that offer insight into a different culture
rather than college friends. That will also assist in your English language
Proficiency and a local accent if you wish to stay back after graduation.
Do
not waste money on buying things like new cars. They are expensive to maintain,
primarily on account of insurance. Instead, use local transport to the maximum,
easily accessible and affordable in most cities worldwide.
If
you must, buy a used car and that too after the studies are over. Never buy a
new vehicle as a student, even if your parents offer you to do so.
