Assistantships vs Scholarships; what you need to know.
Assistantship simply means a
paid academic appointment made to a graduate student that involves part-time
teaching or research.
A scholarship is a grant or
payment made to support a student's education, awarded based on academic or
other achievements.
With this definition, I hope
you can see that there is not much difference between the two.
On Assistantships.
When applying to US schools,
that is what you want to get. It is technically the scholarship you're looking
for.
They come majorly in two
forms:
1. Teaching Assistantship
2. Research Assistantship
There are other forms of
Assistantships that are not so common, but these two are the most popular ones.
As a Teaching Assistant, you
have a teaching responsibility that you must fulfill. Usually, you teach
undergraduate students, and/or grade their homework and exams. Your work is
20hrs per week on the max.
As a Research Assistant,
you're fully devoted to research. More like you're employed to work in the lab.
Of course, the research work is still your research work for your graduate
study or for the group you belong to.
The monthly stipend you're
paid either as TA (Teaching Assistant) or RA (Research Assistant) is actually
for the work you do. It's not free money.
Your tuition fee and health
insurance (not in all cases) are also waived by the University if you win a TA
or RA.
Canada and other
high-income countries do not usually use the term Assistantship. Often,
it is a scholarship funded by a supervisor, an external organization, or the
school itself.
Whichever way this may come,
it usually would cover these three things:
📌Tuition
📌Living expenses
📌Health insurance (full or in part)
Some scholarships go to the
extent of covering visa fees, flight fees, and living expenses for dependents.
To win any of these
scholarships or Assistantships, you must know how to prepare an outstanding
application package. And this is what we do at Vantage Migration.
