Making new friends as an international student.

While studying abroad, it can be challenging to make new friends. Being an international student is fun and rewarding. You get to meet new people, gain knowledge of various cultures and exchange a variety of perspectives.

But what if you speak a different language from your colleagues, or you feel your colleagues may not understand your English because of how you speak it or you are slightly more introverted? Creating connections and friendships can be challenging in this circumstance.

Here are some helpful hints for overcoming language and cultural barriers to connect with others.

1. Library Talks

The library might not be the best place to socialize, but it is a fact that the majority of students made one of their strongest connections there. One of the best places to meet people with similar academic interests is in a library. You'll be able to build strong relationships with one another because you share interests that transcend language and cultural divides. Therefore, try to go to the library as often as possible. You might be surprised to meet someone in your department or program.

2. Joining a committee or club.

When you join a committee, you learn how to organize events and work with others to solve problems. Your club members, whether they belong to a communication club or a sports club, are one of the best connections you can make. These connections can be of assistance to you on both your personal and professional journeys.

Although diversity may appear overwhelming, working together to solve problems or bring about exciting events makes it enjoyable!

3. Cultural celebrations

Social events like new year's celebrations are great opportunities to meet new people, make connections, and break the ice. Not only is it simple and fun to connect with new friends in welcoming, festive settings where greetings are exchanged, but it is also an excellent opportunity to know more about the culture of your hosts.

Participating in such activities helps to break down cultural barriers and strengthen connections, whether it's participating in traditional celebrations or making new dishes with others. When you try to actively immerse yourself in the environment, it becomes easier to connect across cultural barriers.

When there are differences in language and culture, friendships and connections may take on a different shape. However, it is a fun and extremely rewarding part of being an international student.

In conclusion, when you get to school, do not isolate yourself because you're an international student. Nobody will know you if you do. Ask questions when you're confused, talk to someone in your class, and do not always try to figure it out all by yourself.
