Beyond the Classroom: Balancing Work and School

If you're an international student, the chances are you've thought about working to supplement your studies, or perhaps you're already doing it.  Juggling work and school is incredibly common; many students do it out of necessity, to gain experience, or simply to make some extra cash.  Balancing work and school can be incredibly rewarding - you build valuable skills, boost your finances, and potentially even open new career doors. However, let's be honest, it's also tough. Finding the right balance between your studies and work commitments is a key challenge faced by students determined to push beyond the classroom.

Time Management Strategies

It's really important to manage your time effectively to stay productive, reduce stress, and reach your goals. Here are some helpful strategies:
  1. Start Your Day with a Plan: First thing in the morning, make a to-do list of all the things you need to get done. Crossing off tasks as you complete them can give you a sense of achievement and help you see what you've accomplished at the end of the day. You could categorize tasks as high, medium, or low priority, or give each task a score from 1 to 10 and order them accordingly. So, if you have early morning class lectures you just must attend, those will be high priority while work may come next as medium or even low priority. However, in the weekends, you may not have so many class lectures. So, work jumps up on the list to high priority. In any case, try avoiding multi-tasking as much as possible. Focus on one task at a time. Multitasking can reduce efficiency and increase the likelihood of errors.
  2. Use Technology Wisely: Make use of calendars, task management apps, and reminders to help you stay organized. Set deadlines and allocate time for specific tasks to keep yourself on track.
  3. Breaks and Distractions: Identify common distractions like social media and notifications and create a work environment that helps you stay focused. This point applies to both when you are at work and when you are studying. You might consider using tools like website blockers or noise-canceling headphones to help you concentrate. However, you might sometimes find yourself exhausted and that would definitely impact your ability to stay focused. Regular breaks can actually boost your productivity, so it is no point trying to push yourself when from all indications you need a rest. Techniques like the Pomodoro Technique, which involves 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break, can help you stay focused.
  4. Learn to say "NO": It's okay to politely decline tasks or meetings that don't align with your priorities. Protect your time and avoid taking on too much.

Maintaining Mental and Physical Well-being

It's really important for international students to take care of their mental and physical health. If they're not feeling good mentally, it can affect their studies, social life, and overall well-being.

Many international students struggle with stress, especially when they have to juggle work and studies. When assignments start piling up and exams are only a few weeks away, and you're worried about not being able to quit your part-time job because you need the money to make ends meet, it can really pile on the stress and take a toll on your mental health.

Taking care of your physical health is key because a healthy body means a healthy mind. Even exercising for 45 minutes at the gym or going for a daily walk around your neighborhood or campus can help you relax. Eating nutritious meals on time is also important. Getting enough sleep is incredibly important for your mental and physical well-being. While it may seem impossible, aim for a full 8 hours of sleep each night to make sure your body is functioning well.

It's important to have an outlet for your emotions, especially when it comes to mental health. Talk to people you trust, whether it's a friend or a classmate. Sometimes sharing your feelings with someone else can make a big difference. And if situations seem like they are getting out of control, speak to a professional.
