10 THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR WHILE MAKING YOUR APPLICATION

Now that we have extensively discussed the ways you can Search for the right course or schools.

It is expedient to consider a few things that are very necessary if you must clinch that admission letter.

Here are 10 things you must look out for:

1 Designated Learning Institution (DLI) Number: The Canadian government has given each approved school for international studies a Designated Learning Institution Number. This is an authorization that permits them to serve international students. So if you are applying for a school in Canada, and it doesn’t have a DLI number, do not continue with the application as it would only be a waste of time.

2. The programs they offer: Have you ever checked on a school website for a particular program, only to find that it is unavailable? If you have nodded in affirmation, then you are not alone; there are about a thousand and one students who have encountered the same challenge. When you log into a school website, endeavor to check the school program list for your preferred course but we advise that you check for a course that is close to the course you want to study.

3. Name of the program of interest: As you search for your preferred program, you must do well to cross-check the name. Many schools have different names for the same program. For instance, the course, Public Health, has been called Applied Health science in an institution while another institution calls it Population Health. So if you are insistent on that particular name, you may have to end up missing out on the amazing benefits of the course.

4Grade Point Average: Many schools recognize that international students come from a wide range of backgrounds so there’s no one answer to what constitutes a good GPA. However, most top colleges select applicants whose GPAs range from 3.5 to 4.0; anything less than 3.5 would be considered too low. Therefore, you must do well to calculate your grade, so you do not waste time applying to a school that will not accept your application.

5Length of the program: It is important to consider your program with respect to the length of stay. If you are applying for a scholarship, do not apply for an 8 months course, as Canada gives graduation Permit to students who have studied between 1-3 years. However, if you are funding your program yourself, you can afford to apply for a short course, so you do not continue to pay tuition fees.

6. Funding policy: Every school has a funding policy. As a prospective student, you must be curious and diligent. Since you now know that schools have funding policies, especially at a departmental level, you can even write to the school to ask for funding that can be used to support your application.

7Scholarships: This topic has been dealt with extensively in the previous edition. Make sure to check if the school has a school-level scholarship or a program-level scholarship. Knowing this will help you decide how to go about your application.

8. Tuition Fee: Most courses have been known to have similar, the same, or different fees for their various courses and programs. So if you are applying for a non-funded course, do well to check to the course and their tuition fees.

9. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Test: 99% of schools in Canada do not require IELTS from students from English-speaking countries or students who have studied in English for at least three years. Do not give in to the pressure of undertaking an IELTS test because it is not necessary. In case, you are in doubt, check for schools that have an IELTS waiver.

10. WES/ECE Transcript Evaluation: WES is the credential evaluation services provider that provides best-in-class credential evaluations, same as ECE.  Do well to check if the school you are applying to requires you to send the hard copies of your transcripts directly or that you send them to WES for evaluation before commencing your application.
